We will host the following Christmas themed events at the library to celebrate the Holiday Season:

Saturday, December 17th:
Christmas Crafts for Kids - Join us as we provide craft supplies and ideas for creating handmade ornaments, decorations and gifts. This event will be from 10am to 2pm in the Meeting Room.

Thursday, December 22nd:
Christmas PJ Party - Join us for a Christmas themed storytime for young children as we read our favorite Christmas stories, sing our favorite Christmas songs, and lounge around in our Christmas pajamas. This event will be from 6pm to 7pm in the Children's Area.

Teen Read Week @ the Library

The library will celebrate Teen Read Week next week with the theme "A Midsummer Knight's Read". Our schedule for Teen Read Week will be as follows:

Tuesday, October 18 @ 10:00am
Medieval Costuming - learn to make a basic medieval "T" tunic. Halloween is just around the corner and we want to be ready. Join us and learn to make this basic costume piece that is easy to make and versatile enough to be used in any costume design you can imagine. The library will provide materials and supplies. You provide a tshirt to be used for sizing the costume. Space is limited and will be open to the first 10 teens to sign up at the circulation desk.

Marshmallow Wars - learn to make a Trebuchet. We will be making miniature medieval siege engines using basic household items and mini-marshmallows. Once finished, let the Marshmallow Wars begin! Space is limited and will be open to the first 10 teens to sign up at the circulation desk.

Saturday, October 22 @ 11:00am
Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) will visit the library to demonstrate medieval costuming, arts, crafts and "implements of destruction". Not sure what an anachronism is? Join us and learn all about it from members of the SCA as they share demonstrations of medieval life and culture. This event is open to everyone!

In addition to these scheduled events, the library will have the Wii set up and available to teens wishing to check out "time" to play anytime during our regular business hours.

"Generations Online Computer Class" offered at Meigs County Senior Center

Read Tennessee Encourages Early Grades Reading

The Tennessee Department of Education announced today the launch of ReadsTennesse.org, a website that will help teachers, parents, and community members understand new curriculum standards and increased expectations for learning.
Read Tennessee provides an easy to navigate resource for teachers, families and community memebers to utilize in the classroom and at home. Each section complies information, activities, and tools to help inspire young children to engage and develop early grades reading and learning skills. These tools help teachers create more challenging lessons, guide parents and guardians in better understanding what their child might be learning and doing at different stages of his/her development, and encourage community members to get informed and get involved in motivating our children towards successful futures.
We encourage you to explore the website and to take advantage of the information provided to help accelerate the learning of Tennessee's children.

Meigs County Receives Technology Grant for the Meigs County - Decatur Public Library

Today Rep. Eric Watson presented Meigs County with a $15,138 grant to upgrade technology at the Meigs County - Decatur Public Library.

This grant will be used to provide a wireless laptop computer lab. This lab will allow us to offer basic computer classes, one-on-one assistance for job seekers, and other training opportunities for our community. The grant may be used to cover costs for computer equipment, new training, educational opportunities, Internet access and other enhancements approved by the USDA.

The sale will begin with a "FRIENDS ONLY" sale from 10:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday, May 21st, which is open only to members of the Meigs - Decatur Friends of the Library. It will open to the public during regular library hours from May 23rd to May 28th. We have started making our plans for this year's Summer Reading Program. The theme is "One World, Many Stories". The library is currently looking for volunteers to help in the following areas:

* Planning and organizing school visits to promote the summer reading program
* Solicit donations of incentive prizes from local businesses
* Assist the librarian with planning and organizing a "World Carnival" event to celebrate summer reading at the library

We will also need volunteers in the following areas beginning May 23, 2011:

* Help register participants for the summer reading program
* Assist the librarian with storytime or other programs
* Offer to teach or help present a craft program
* Create a display or help decorate for a program
* Chaperone a family movie event
* Offer to host a game or booth at the World Carnival event in July

A skeleton crew of volunteers worked Sunday afternoon to get a jump on the painting ahead of us. Painting in the main room of the library is about 50% complete and the Ladies Restroom is finished.

Wi-Fi is still up and running and available from the parking lot if you need wireless internet access. Staff will still be available via email at meigslibrary@hotmail.com if you need to contact them during the renovation.

Library to close for renovations

The Meigs County - Decatur Public Library will close to the public beginning May 1, 2010 and is expected to reopen on Monday, May 10, 2010. During this time, renovation work will be done in the main part of the library and in the Community Room. Explore! To the Moon, Mars and Beyond!

Explore! To the Moon, Mars and Beyond is a 10 week program designed to engage students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in space and planetary science in the after school informal learning environment. The program is presented at Meigs North and Meigs South Elementary Schools each week by our library staff and volunteers.

Through hands on activities and supporting resources such as videos, recommended books and web sites, participants will be immersed in the wonders of rockets, space colonies, our solar system, staying healthy in space and more!

Local partnerships with planetariums, museums, scientists, and Solar System Ambassadors (NASA trained volunteers) provide exciting opportunities for children to learn from experts in the field of space science. The program is funded by a grant from VEC Customer Shares and is free to all participants.

This site will updated weekly with news from our "Explore! To the Moon, Mars and Beyond" after school program.

Meigs County Imagination Library reaches another milestone

As of August 9th, the Meigs County Imagination Library program has reached 75% Enrollment. This means that 75% of children in our county under the age of five are receiving free books in the mail every month! This number is in addition to the 379 children that have already graduated from the program when they turned five.

Next time you see a member of the Meigs County - Decatur Chamber of Commerce, the Meigs County Commission or a library staff member, be sure to thank them for helping our county reach this important milestone. And please thank your postal carrier for helping to deliver over 22,000 books to "our children".

League of Extraordinary Teens Induction 2008

Three Meigs County teens were inducted into the Governors Books from Birth Foundation's League of Extraordinary Teens on August 12, 2008. Destiny Brown, Kristina Dyess and Tyler Peaden each fulfilled the requirements for League membership by enrolling 10 children in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library and raising $135 towards maintaining the program in Meigs County.

There are now 18 teens in Meigs County who are members of the League of Extraordinary Teens. For more information about this program, or to see a complete list of League members, visit www.governorsfoundation.org.

Summer Reading Program Complete

The Summer Reading Program came to an end on Thursday, July 10th. Participants were able to turn in their reading and listening logs at this time. Each participant received a certificate for being a "Star Reader" and a gift pack with rewards based on their reading accomplishments. Each certificate was signed by Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, Secretary of State Riley C. Darnell, State Librarian Jeanne Suggs and the Meigs County Library Director Judith Reynolds.

Reading and Listening Logs will be accepted at the circulation desk until July 31st. Participants can still receive their certificates and prize packs by turning in a completed log.

The current cumulative count of books read during our summer reading program is 443 books read. Listeners in the program logged over 93 hours of listening time. These numbers will continue to increase as logs are turned in.

Great job, Summer Reading participants!

Regular weekly storytime events with Miss Linda will resume on Tuesday, July 15th at 10:30am.

We Have Liftoff...

Summer Reading Participants learned about rockets today, including a brief history and the importance of rocket science to the space program. Afterwards, each participant was able to launch a rocket made out of a 1 liter plastic bottle. Rockets soared between 50 and 80 feet each.

The launcher was made by library volunteers Joey Huffman and Ted Giddens. Volunteers Joey Huffman, Darren Layman, Destiny Brown and Tyler Peaden assisted with the launch party, which allowed each participant several turns launching their pop bottle rocket. We would like to thank all of our volunteers for helping us with our Summer Reading Program.

TaeKwonDo Demonstration

Certified TaeKwonDo Instructor Moises Contreras visited the library today to help us continue to "Find What's Out There @ your library". Mr. Contreras demonstrated the three listening positions of TaeKwonDo, as well as some of the basic skills taught at the Athens TaeKwonDo Plus Academy. He also gave a basic lesson on personal safety to participants.

TaeKwonDo is a martial art form that originated in Korea. Classes are designed to improve concentration, self-confidence and mind/body health. There must be a Mad Scientist at work!

Today we were visited by a Mad Scientist from Nashville, Tennessee. He is a member of Mad Science, the world's leading provider of science enrichment for children. During his visit, summer reading participants learned about the properties of light and the properties of gases. Using glasses with special lenses, participants learned about prisms and about the color spectrum that makes up "white light". We also learned about gases through a series of experiments using dry ice.

Miss Linda entertained us with a puppet show titled "Winnie the Pooh on the Moon". After the show, she shared some tips about using puppets to enhance storytime.

The 2008 Guitar Hero Teen Tournament Champion is John Terrell! John won the final round of the tournament by beating points leader Darren Layman in a head to head, expert level face off playing "Rock This Town". Jason Sandaford was voted "Best Style" for his energetic performances throughout the tournament. Everyone had a great time during the tournament, and we hope to continue adding gaming events at the library in the future.

Captain Bob's Moon Adventure

A Visit From a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Darth Vader stopped in on Saturday to use the Public Access Computers. While here, he and his companions spent time visiting with summer reading participants and their families. There were 52 participants in our Star Wars themed event on Saturday.

As of last count, our summer reading participants have read 108 books collectively.

Alien Adventures!

Our "Alien Adventure" started with a craft. Everyone made a personalized set of dillyboppers to wear throughout the day. After releasing our inner aliens and tuning in with our custom made antennae, we shared a story titled "EEK GOB LOPE" by Eve Feldman.

So far, summer reading participants have reported reading 72 books collectively. Way to go, Readers!

Summer Reading begins with a visit from Sunshine Monkeyshines

Mary Lynn Campbell of Sunshine Monkeyshines visited the library today with four of her monkey friends to help us celebrate reading as part of our Starship Adventure. There were 62 people anxiously awaiting their arrival. During her visit, Mary Lynn taught us about Capuchin and Common Marmoset monkeys. She taught us how to tell the difference between a monkey and an ape. She shared information about their diets, their habitats and their wonderful personalities. Mary Lynn also shared information about how monkeys have contributed to the NASA Space Program and have played a vital role in the exploration of space. She even recommended a book about a chimpanzee that went into space titled "Spacechimp: NASA's Ape in Space" by Melinda Farbman and Frye Gaillard.

Sunshine Monkeyshines is in their 20th year of educating and entertaining with their wonderful monkeys. As always, we had a great time during their visit. To learn more about Sunshine Monkeyshines, visit www.sunshinemonkeyshines.com.

Begin your Starship Adventure @ the Library by attending our Summer Reading Kick-Off Party on Saturday, June 7, 2008. Characters from Star Wars will be visiting the library and will be available for pictures with all attendees between 11am and 1pm, so remember to bring your camera!This will be the final day to register for the 2008 Summer Reading Program.

The Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) is pleased to announce the addition of LearningExpress Library to the TEL collection of online resources. (Remember, TEL is available to all Tennesseeans, free of charge! )

LearningExpress Library is a comprehensive, interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial course series designed to help patrons succeed on academic or licensing tests. Students and patrons get immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of test results.

What is R.E.A.D.S?

R.E.A.D.S. is an acronym for the Regional eBook and Audiobook Download System. As a member of the Meigs County - Decatur Public Library, you can checkout and download audio books and PDF eBooks with your library card. Digital books are compatible with many desktops, laptops, table PCs, WMA/MP3 players, pocket PCs, and certain Smartphones. Many audio book titles may also be burned to CD and used in car stereos and regular CD players.

To check materials out, go to http://reads.lib.overdrive.com/. Browse the collection, select a title, and then enter a valid library card number to download the digital book. If a title is not immediately available, users can place a hold and will receive an email notification when it's ready for checkout. After 14 days the digital books are automatically returned to the system and made available to the next user. Many titles are "always available," meaning they feature unlimited, concurrent use. No trip to the library is required, and there are no late fees.
